  Instrument Refresher Course News
United States Air Force (USAF) directives require that all pilots complete a 6-hour Instrument Refresher Course (IRC) during the appropriate instrument evaluation "eligibility period." Previously, this training was conducted in a classroom for most aircraft and via traditional Computer Based Training (CBT) for the other airframes.

The USAF, Air Mobility Command (AMC) contracted with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to convert 13 existing aircraft specific IRCs from classroom instruction and legacy CBT to browser-based Interactive Multimedia Instruction (IMI). The conversion is using Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) concepts and will result in courseware capable of being delivered live over the Internet, or "off-line" via a CD-ROM. Both delivery methods will use an enterprise level Learning Management System (LMS) for administration and management of the courses and students.

Instrument Refresher Course (IRC)
In conformance with the ADL Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM), highly interactive course content is being designed and developed in a modular fashion with an emphasis on reusability. This reuse of learning objects enables a highly efficient development process and allows for easy identification of learning resources for future use in other applications.

Each course contains approximately five hours of highly engaging material comprised of three hours of common core material and two hours of aircraft specific content.

Our Instructional Designers incorporated interactive, scenario-based exercises and quizzes offering opportunities for students to practice skills with a level of fidelity previously unavailable for these courses. Other rich media including high quality animations, graphics and photographs are used to engage the student and personalize the learning experience. A variety of questioning techniques are used to ensure learning objectives are achieved. The courses are comprised of four modules. Each module is comprised of lessons and each lesson of topics. This course construction method allows maximum flexibility for future enhancements such as sequencing or complex navigation. Course modules include:

Preflight and Departure
Approaches
Enroute
Landings

Lastly, an on-line, randomly generated certification test is in development that will meet the requirements outlined in Air Force directives. This testing completes total automation of the entire IRC process resulting in a substantial dollar savings and returning certified aircrew to the flight station faster than ever before.
